Revisit Your Values. Reset Your Life.
There are moments in life that seem disruptive. Sometimes even deeply unsettling. These are times when something feels off, or urgent, life changing. Right now, that’s how I’m feeling. I get a sense that something must give in the conditions of the world. Something could erupt and I’m not so sure that eruption would be easy to navigate.
Maybe you’re feeling something similar. And oh-boy-howdy, you sure can feel it some days more than others.
In my experience, when these moments show up, it’s wise to deliberately pause and consult with one’s values. That’s right, when change or upheaval seem imminent, or something thick and ominous is in the air, I know where I can go to find an honest, self-directed way to navigate, no matter what.
In my mind and heart, realignment with one’s personal formula for integrity (aka core values) is always a safe bet. If you haven’t recently revisited your core values, let me invite you to do so. If you haven’t yet applied rigor and a proven process to identifying your values, let me offer my most frequent and effective course to you at a huge discount (Coupon Code GUIDE for $49.00).
Your Values
Values differ from beliefs because they are often identified through a filtering process and clarified by the heart, mind, and gut instincts.
They are synonymous with:
- Your North Start
- Inner Compass
- Personal Plumb Line
Values are directional and anchoring. And when we reconnect with them, something powerful happens: They begin to challenge, guide, or validate our choices and actions.
For example: If you say you value freedom, yet you go around acting as if “I have no real choice,” a part of you is standing outside of personal integrity.
If you say you value honesty, yet behave in a way that says, “It’s safer to stay quiet,” you cause tension within your body and soul. It could feel like inner dissonance.
If you say you value growth, yet when growth opportunities arise, you say to yourself, “I’m just not up for a challenge.” Among other things, this may leave you feeling stuck and not realizing you’re doing something harmful to yourself. Even consider that you might
be doing something against your best self.
And to be honest, this tension or lack of alignment might be where people sit and ruminate or worry or simply ignore that what is happening is a signal. What is happening around us is a global wake-up call.
Our personal values can guide us to find an honorable path through the noise and chaos. And if you’ve recently and rigorously identified your values, it’s time to remind all of us that this process of clarifying what they are so we can align action to inner truth is NOT A ONCE IN A LIFETIME event.
The Work: Revisit, Reclaim, Realign
Since it isn’t a one-time exercise, it is a practice. Because life changes. You change, and your understanding of what matters deepens
over time, if and when we remain generative and focus on personal growth.
So here is this Guidepost’s Challenge:
Revisit your values. And refine them or redefine them or rediscover them. Find what is true for you in light of today’s situation.
Reclaim them by making sure you’ve clearly named them, defined them, own them, and use actions to stand by them. Make every effort to realign your life to them.
If you’re a previous client or someone who has used my SoulSalt method to excavate and own your core value system, this SoulSalt exercise can help you reset. (You may have a copy of my book, and you’ve completed Chapter 3, or you’ve gone through the Be True online course, or completed the assignment with me during a session or presentation.)
The SoulSalt Core-Value Reset Exercise:
Set aside 10–15 minutes. Write your answers instinctually and don’t over-think them.
Step 1: Name What Matters Now
List your top 3–5 values as they feel true today. Maybe this is a deeper cut into your original values, maybe one or two have shifted and you replace them with one or two from the second to last step in the process you went through initially.
Think about who you are now instead of who you were then or who you sense others expect you to be.
Step 2: Spot A Gap (If there is one)
For each value, ask: Where is my life reflecting and not reflecting core value alignment? Be honest. Enlist courage to gain clarity.
Step 3: Find the Belief Beneath It
For each gap, ask: What am I believing that is allowing this misalignment?
(Example: “I value freedom, but I stay stuck → Am I believing that I don’t have options.”)
Step 4: Choose a Better Belief
Gently challenge that belief. Ask: Is this absolutely the truth? What else could be true instead? What might I value that is being disregarded? Write one new, more empowering belief aligned with your value.
(Example: “I value courage, and yet I don’t always speak out → Am I lacking courage? → No, I value courage yet temporarily placing my need for safety first and waiting for the right times and places to speak up.”)
Step 5: Take One Aligned Action
Within the next 24–72 hours, take one small action that reflects your newly refined value.
(Example: “I still value courage and will speak up when and where I can to make an impact and to preserve a certain amount of safety. → Right now, I’m honoring the need for sane, safe actions in dangerous situations. My value remains alive and well inside me. I’ll watch for times to speak out. And I will be selective.”)
Your turn. What is one small, yet aligned action you can take now to stand in your integrity? Take it. Keep it small and achievable. Doing one small thing is better than doing nothing. Over time, one small thing at a time adds up to a heap-o-making a difference.
